Andy Thompson
Andy Thompson
returns to the Folk Club after a three year absence: It was with James
Wilkinson, Flip Grater and Andys' daughter, Marla-Jean that he last
appeared at Maddisons in 2003. Since then, he has continued teaching
his song and performance classes at Polytech and taking music programmes
into the womens prison and composing for local theatre productions.
Andy Thompson began his musical journey (in bare feet) at the folk club
in famous Bedford Row in 1970 when Phil Garland was at the helm.
Since then he
has been instrumental in forming several eclectic bands such as Beyond a
Joke, and The Umbilical Chords, blending folk, blues/rock and soul
styles.
But mostly, he has been an ardent soloist bringing
passionate songs that reflect our social psyche and landscape and is
best known for his unwavering satirical comments on the misuse of the
environment. He has also been commissioned to write songs about heritage
and historical issues over many years and has performed with such
luminaries as Shona Laimg and the mercurial James Wilkinson in recent
times. Andy suffered an horrific burns injury to 20% of his body in a
freak accident in 2005 that almost put an end to his long career as an
innovative guitar player and tutor; but with ongoing physiotherapy and
self-will he is making a miraculous recovery and 2006 will see him in
quite a number of concerts about the city, soon.
Andy will be joined on the night by his recently married
daughter, Marla-Jean and promises some new, revealing songs with
flavours of humour, irony, poignancy and honesty.
