Faerd – expedition, life’s work, a journey.
A quintet whose music crosses borders between styles,
nationalities and traditions. Music with roots going back before
1700 – Danish and Faroese ballads, melodies by the Faroese
troubadour J.Chr.Svabo and Shetland fiddle tunes.
Peter Uhrbrand, prize-winning Danish fiddle and viola player, has
years of experience working with the traditional music and dance of
the island of Fanø, with his bands Jæ’Sweevers and ULC. Peter has
also his Spring project, two jazz musicians, Mads Vinding and Peter
Rosendahl, fusing Danish folk and jazz. This group of musicians has
recently been in the studio again recording with the Irish uillean
pipes virtuoso Liam O’Flynn. Peter has represented Danish Folk Music
at Celtic Connections in Glasgow and Folk Alliance in Canada.
Jens Ulvsand, Swedish guitar, bouzouki player and singer. Jen has
been an integrated part of the Swedish folk music scene over the
last 15 years and has worked in a lot of different musical projects
during this time. Jens Ulvsand is a member of the Swedish
internationally well known Avadå Band, the Danish/Swedish project
Trio Mio and the Namibian Willie Mbuende band.
Besides his work as a touring musician, Jens is a highly
respected teacher at the Music Academies in Malmø, Sweden and
Odense, Denmark.
Eskil Romme, soprano saxophonist and accordion player from
Denmark, has since the mid-seventies worked with musical connections
across the North Atlantic, from Canada to to Scotland and
Scandinavia. In 1978, Eskil Romme formed the band Suleskær, which
featured musicians from Scotland, Scandinavia and Denmark. Then,
with Scots singer and guitarist Rod Sinclair, came the trio Sula,
and in the Faroese Band Spælimenninir í Hoydølum. Eskil has toured
with Sula in Europe, New Zealand and Australia.
What the press wrote about the group’s first CD – Faerd, released
in 2002:
“Færd’s music, both live and on CD, is a joy to the
ear…”
Thorbjørn Sjøgren, Danish magazine Folk & Musik
“The interplay between viola, accordeon and saxophone works
exceptionally well…”
Jim Lee, Dirty Linen,USA
“The beautiful voice is a fine match for the gentle poetry
and the intense drama of the medieval ballads … Romme’s lyric and
colourful soprano saxophone is impressive…”
Søren Chr.Kirkegaard
Danish national daily Jyllands Posten
The result is rather impressive: a beautiful combination of old
traditional music and modern influences, open-minded and masterfully
presented… The combination of these musicians works incredibly
well... A strong album of Northern European music, enjoyable from
the first to the last minute…
