Folk duo Hand On Heart have been described as ' stylists in the Celtic tradition' and that seems to fit really well. Heavily influenced by the traditions in Scotland and Ireland, Nina Szifris and Mike Scott can take traditional, contemporary and original songs and tunes and give them their own twist! They use an innovative mix of guitar, mandocello, bodhran and vocals which can also be heard on their three albums - "Hand On Heart", "Journey of the Heart" and "The Song Collection".
Audiences can expect to hear a Robert Burns song followed by a set of jigs, then a version of a Leonard Cohen classic or a Snow Patrol number. Hand on Heart always work hard to engage their audiences with stories and humour and thrive on live performance.
Nina provides the vocal lead, guitar and bodhran. Her previous band Blackthorn toured extensively in the UK and Europe and recorded two albums which are now much sought after on the collector's market. She has a distinctive vocal style and can sing touching love songs (just listen to her version of Dougie MacLean's "Caledonia") with the same conviction as she delivers driving social comment.
Mike Scott provides mandocello and vocal. He is a former member of Oakenshield who broadcast frequently on BBC's Folk on Two and produced two albums. His sensitive harmony and lead singing contribute to the remarkable blend of voices. Many of the songs and tunes which Mike writes in collaboration with Nina form part of Hand on Heart's repertoire.
Nina and Mike have also been very active in promoting folk music in the UK, and run the highly regarded National Forest Folk Club and the annual National Forest Folk Festival. As if that was not enough, their son fronts the hugely popular Monster Ceilidh Band so their impact on the UK music scene continues and expands!
All in all, Hand on Heart will be sure to give you a good night! Whether the venue is a small back room or a Festival stage they can be relied upon to deliver the goods every time.
