Hot Club Sandwich have been entertaining audiences all over
Australasia for over a decade.
From the cafes and bars of their home town, Wellington, to jazz
and Arts festivals in Wanaka, Nelson, Queenstown, Taranaki,
Christchurch, Tauranga, Taupo, Rotorua, Manawatu, Sydney and
Norfolk Island, their unique combination of swinging “Hot
Club” rhythm, scorching improvised solos, tight three-part
vocal harmonies and snappy lyrics gets feet tapping and
funny-bones snapping.
Andrew London’s quirky, slightly satirical original songs
have become the backbone of the trio’s repertoire.
The semi-autobiographical “Middle Class White Boy
Blues” mocks the band’s efforts at this traditional
genre, while “I Used To Be Your Rooster But I’m Just
Your Feather Duster Now” will strike a chord with kiwi
blokes of all ages. “Wake Up Baby” pokes some fun at
couch-potato rugby fans, while “Poddy Understands
Me”, and “Appliances” observe how our culture
is addicted to technology.
“Welcome to Your Wedding” allows the band to purge
some accumulated ennui at the blessed institution. “Enjoy
Yourself or Get Out” reflects a narcissistic attitude
occasionally encountered amongst (too) serious jazz musicians,
and “I Don’t Recognise This Neighbourhood”
bemoans the corporate homogenisation of small town New
Zealand.
Guitarist Andrew London and bass player Terry “The Engine
Room” Crayford are joined by multi-instrumentalist Nils
Olsen who solos on clarinet, sax and flute.
Hot Club Sandwich have six CDs to their credit, 2007’s
“Café Matrix” being the latest. 2004’s
“Toasted” earned them a rare four-star review in the
USA’s “Downbeat” magazine, the world’s
most widely-read and longest-standing jazz publication.
