Although Read and Kay Hudson have been married for 32 years,
and have shared their musical preferences for most of that time,
it was only about 10 years ago that Kay started to play. Read was
playing in a old time country band in Auckland called the Old
Guns with Al Young and Al Lewis when the band's bass player, Tim
Hudson went off to University in Dunedin, leaving the band with
no bass player.
Kay very rapidly learnt bass guitar, all the band's repertoire
and stayed with the Old Guns until that band retired. Later, the
two Hudsons joined with Keith and Cheryl Hollis in another old
time country band, called Diamonds in the Rough. They remained in
the band until Read and Kay decided to return to Read's old home
on the South Island West Coast.
The Hudsons contined to play, with a couple of Coast bands,
before Kay began to write songs, chiefly about the Coast, its
places and people. While they have a band, known as the Jones
Brothers, this band tends to be a country/Rock 'n Roll band, and
the Jones Brothers are now semi retired.
Kay's songs cover a wide spectrum: there are songs about the
pioneers who came to the Coast, songs about local goings - on,
and songs about family and friends. Some songs are sad, some are
thoughtful, some will bring a chuckle or two, and some may convey
a message about just how hard it really was in the old days of
the Coast.
Kay and Read are recording many of these songs at home, and
hope to be able to master the songs in a proper studio this year,
with a C D release in the not too distant future.
Kay plays guitar, and sings, while Read plays guitar,
resonator guitar, and mandolin, and helps with singing. Their
style is best described as old time country, with a lot of
bluegrass and folk influences, similar to the great American
'brother' acts that made up, and continue to make up a major part
of bluegrass and old time country music.
